About Lingual Braces

Beachwood Dental is proud to offer lingual braces to our Los Alamitos, CA patients. Lingual braces are unique from traditional metal braces in that they are placed behind the teeth, near the tongue, for patients who are concerned about the cosmetic appearance of their braces. Lingual braces are still constructed from a sturdy, stainless steel material that makes up the brackets, allowing them to effectively straighten out and move the teeth into their proper place over time. If patients are suffering from overcrowded, crooked, or protruding teeth but do not want their braces to be visible, then lingual braces can offer those benefits. A consult with our seasoned orthodontist can help determine the right kind of lingual braces and the exact duration needed to create the most appealing smile.

What to Expect

The process for lingual braces will be different than traditional braces since they will reside behind the teeth instead of on the front surface. Once the patient decides on lingual braces, an impression of both rows of their teeth will be made to create custom brackets that fit securely behind their teeth. The process of creating these brackets can take a few weeks. Once the metal brackets have arrived, the patient will return to our Los Alamitos office, and our orthodontist will place the brackets behind the patient's teeth and secure them with archwires that will be placed between the brackets. The process should be comfortable and quick.

Treatment Aftercare

After receiving lingual braces, patients should pay close attention to their oral hygiene routine. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash should be a priority to ensure that food and bacteria are not trapped between the braces. Regular follow ups will be scheduled with our orthodontist to ensure the teeth are aligning at the proper rate and the braces are fitting correctly. Patients may feel mild discomfort once the braces are first placed, but over time they should adjust to the new feeling. Depending on the needs and goals of the patients, lingual braces can be left on between 18 - 36 months for optimal results.

Reveal A Straighter Smile
