Scaling and Root Planing in Los Alamitos, CA

Gum disease, both gingivitis and the more severe periodontitis, is caused by plaque and tartar build up that eventually hardens on the teeth and below the gums. In many cases, the plaque is formed in hard-to-reach places that can not be removed by simply brushing or flossing the teeth. Beachwood Dental offers scaling and root planing (SRP) to address the plaque and tartar build up below the gums. During this procedure, one of our accomplished dentists or dental hygienists will first perform the scaling treatment. Scaling involves a deep cleaning and scraping of the gum pockets (the area where the teeth meet the gums) in order to remove the plaque and bacteria that has built up. The next step is the root planing, which evens out the surface of the teeth in order to prevent future build up and remove rough areas on the tooth that may cause irritation. Depending on the severity of the condition, multiple sessions may be required to rehabilitate the gums. SRP is a very effective way to treat early stages of gum disease or prevent gum disease from developing. 

For the scaling and root planing procedure, the patient will be given local anesthesia on the areas being treated. Sedation may be added to help the patient remain calm and comfortable during the procedure. To reach all areas of the gum pocket and remove the plaque and tartar that has built up, our team member will use a manual scaling tool or an ultrasonic cleaner. After the gum pocket is cleaned, our dentist will minimize the areas where plaque and tartar can become trapped by planing (smoothing) the surface of the tooth. After the procedure, the gums will begin to heal and reattach properly to the tooth root. Some patients may need more than one treatment to get their best results.

After the scaling and root planing treatment, the patient might experience some inflammation or bleeding of the gums for a few days after the treatment. To keep the gums and teeth clean after the scaling and root planing procedure, patients should discuss proper techniques for brushing and flossing so they can establish a good home care routine. Patients should also be sure to schedule dental exams at least once a year or as recommended by our dentist. We will usually schedule a follow-up appointment 2 – 4 months after the procedure to check on the progress.
