About Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are one of the most popular ways to address misalignment in the teeth and improve a person's smile. Our Beachwood Dental team is able to offer stainless steel braces to patients who are suffering from a crooked jaw or teeth, gapped teeth, under or overbites, a protruding jaw, and other flaws that may be keeping patients from having their best smile. Stainless steel braces can be administered to both adults and adolescents, using customizable elastics to hold the brackets and braces in place for a tighter fit. Over time, the metal braces will begin to straighten out and improve the overall quality of the teeth's appearance, as well as addressing structural issues. Having straighter teeth is not only more cosmetically appealing, but it is also healthier for the patient's mouth in general, allowing stronger teeth to develop free of pain or chewing issues. We invite anyone who is considering braces to schedule a consult at our Los Alamitos, CA office.

What to Expect

During the procedure, the patient's teeth will be cleaned and dried first. Then, our Beachwood orthodontist will place metal wires around the back of the teeth. The next step involves placing a bonding agent on the surface of the teeth where the brackets will be attached. Once the brackets are in the correct places, a light will be administered to help seal the bonding agent with the brackets. The metal bands on the back of the teeth will also be bonded to the brackets to ensure everything is cemented into place. Then, more wires are placed between the brackets, called archwires, and clamped into place. The last step of the process is to place elastic bands on the brackets and connect them to the wires for added security.

Aftercare

Maintaining good oral hygiene is especially important once a patient has braces. Food and bacteria can easily get trapped in between the braces, so it is crucial that patients remain brushing their teeth twice a day and flossing regularly to ensure that everything is clean and healthy. Patients will typically have a follow-up appointment with our orthodontist once a month to check the amount of progress being made and to see if the braces need tightening. Patients will need some time to adjust to their new braces and how they feel, but the discomfort should subside quickly after.
