About Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common condition that affects many patients. It is the first stage of gum disease, which can eventually, if left untreated, result in advanced stages of periodontitis and tooth decay. Gingivitis is caused by the build up of plaque and tartar that hardens on the teeth and gum pockets. Once the tartar begins to build up, the acid from the foods consumed mixes and can create halitosis and early signs of gum disease. Our Beachwood Dental team can treat gingivitis for our Los Alamitos, CA patients by removing the plaque and tartar from the gum pockets and smoothing out the teeth after the removal. This process is referred to as scaling and root planing (SRP). If patients are suffering from swollen or painful gums, then they should schedule a consult with our dental team.

What to Expect

The best treatment option for patients suffering from gingivitis is SRP, scaling and root planing. During the scaling process, our dentist or hygienist will use a tool to remove and scrape out the built up plaque and tartar from the gum pockets (the place where the teeth and gums come together). Once all the plaque is successfully removed, the next step is to smooth out the surface of the teeth in order to help prevent further build up and irritation.

Treatment Aftercare

After the scaling and root planing procedure is performed and the tartar is successfully removed from the gum pockets, our dentist will recommend that each patient make their at-home oral hygiene a top priority. Brushing twice a day and flossing regularly is crucial to preventing gum disease from returning. Rinsing with mouthwash consistently can also help remove unwanted bacteria and plaque from hard-to-reach places. Regular dental cleanings every 6 months at our Los Alamitos, CA office and exams every year can greatly reduce the risk of gum diseases as well.
