About Sleep Apnea & Snoring
Sleep apnea can be a potentially serious condition in which breathing is temporarily stopped during sleep along with consistently shallow breathing throughout the night. Sleep apnea can occur when the airway becomes obstructed and not as open as it needs to have access to the necessary oxygen. When oxygen is temporarily cut off from the brain, the results can end up being serious. Snoring can also be a sign that sleep apnea is occurring, as it can be triggered by a disruption of the airway, though the 2 are not necessarily always linked. Our Beachwood Dental team recognizes the importance of achieving a restful night of sleep, and we offer treatment to help remedy the issue of the obstructed airway. Our Los Alamitos, CA patients can schedule a consult with one of our dentists to help determine the possible cause and solution for the sleep apnea and/or snoring. Night guards can be an effective treatment to help clear the airway and restore the patient's breathing.
What to Expect
The most common treatment recommended for sleep apnea is wearing a night guard. Night guards are trays that are custom-made to fit the patient's mouth and teeth. Once the patient inserts the night guards, then their airway can become more open, allowing their jaw to relax and let in the necessary oxygen to prevent blockage and snoring to occur. Patients will have an individual consult to determine the appropriate treatment method with one of our dentists. If night guards are recommended, patients will have a mold made of their teeth and then can come pick up their custom night guards within 1 – 2 weeks following the consult.
Once a night guard is made, the patient should be sure to wear them every night. Regular cleaning of the night guard is also important, as bacteria and particles can get stuck in them over time. Patients can clean them with a simple tooth brush and paste between uses. Follow-up appointments will be made to assess the condition of the night guards and ensure that they fit comfortably.
